Looking to better support public use of bandwidth-hungry mobile applications like mobile video, Verizon Wireless has installed a distributed antenna system (DAS) at San Francisco’s Westfield Mall. The site improves wireless coverage throughout the mall located on Market Street.

The build will bring Verizon Wireless’ total investment to more than $7.8 billion in its California network in 2000. Nationally, the company said that it has invested more than $80 billion in wireless.

“Calling, downloading apps and surfing the Web on the Verizon Wireless network is now easier and faster for shoppers, diners and employees,” the company said. “The network upgrade is part of the company’s ongoing investment to keep improving and strengthening the nation’s largest and most reliable wireless network.”

Verizon Wireless serves 98.2 million retail customers, including 92.5 million retail post-paid customers.
